The Importance of Self Care with Lucy Scarfe

Wellbeing Wednesday
Lockdown has taught us many things but the importance of looking after our mental health and wellbeing is a big one. So, as restrictions ease and your social life picks up don’t forget about no.1 – YOU! As your social calendar starts filling up again, make sure to book in some time for yourself and those self-care rituals that made lockdown more bearable. Need some inspo? We spoke to influencer, Lucy Scarfe, about her own routine and how she plans to continue prioritising her wellbeing after lockdown…

Morning exercise

Daily exercise can help you both physically and mentally, boosting your mood and reducing stress and anxiety. I love taking a stroll in my local park amongst the flowers and trees. Find a routine that works for you - if you prefer to exercise at home, throw open a window, let in some fresh air and start with some basic stretching exercises.

Listen to music

I often listen to upbeat, feel-good music which helps me feel positive and more energised in whatever I’m doing. Whether I’m cooking, cleaning or relaxing in the garden, good music always boosts my mood. Or if you’re unwinding at the end of the day, calming music can help lower stress levels.

Prepare a delicious healthy meal

Eating well is a form of self-care! Sometimes, we are too busy to think about (or plan) our food. We should try to prioritize our nutrition, rather than making choices based on convenience. Choose foods that nourish the body and help you feel good. Remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day too!

Rediscover hobbies or learn a new skill

If you have a lot of extra time on your hands, why not take up an old hobby or start a new one? What did you like doing years ago? What would you like to do today? There are so many YouTube tutorials and apps available that can help you learn a new skill from the comfort of your own home! How about playing an instrument, learning a new language, painting, knitting, upholstering or testing your baking skills?

Phone a friend

We all experience loneliness at some point in our lives and being isolated doesn’t help our mental health. Why not pick up the phone and have a good chat and catch-up with a friend? Write a letter or send a card to someone you haven’t been in touch with for a long time; they’ll really appreciate it and it will make you feel better too!

Pamper session

Light some candles, run a warm bubble bath, lie back and have a good soak! Sounds simple but it’s very effective! Add some bath salts or essential oils, such as lavender which is proven to help you sleep well. I like to apply a hair or face mask and paint my nails! Create an evening routine that helps you to unwind. Read a book and try staying away from your phone. This will help you to prepare your body and mind for sleep. Just don’t leave it too late to go to bed!
